Assigned as a boy at birth in 1992, Angela Ponce, from Seville, became the first transsexual woman to win the title of Miss Spain on Friday, June 29th.
Her coronation will allow her to compete for the Miss Univers 2018, which will be held in the Philippines, the country where the French Iris Mittenaere was crowned in 2016. A first for the beauty contest, whose regulation allows transsexual women to participate for six years now.
The Spanish candidate intends to take advantage of her election to broadcast “a message of inclusion, respect, tolerance, love for oneself and others.”

The election of Angela Ponce and her future participation in Miss Universe marks a real change in a competition organized between 1996 and 2014 by the current President of the United States, Donald Trump, who expressed his desire to ban transgender people from taking up to join the army in July 2017 on Twitter.
In France, Angela Ponce would not have had the opportunity to compete. The famous French couturier Jean-Paul Gaultier, president of the jury of the Miss France election in 2016 and 2018, announced in March 2008 in an interview for Europe 1 to be in favor of the participation of transgender candidates in the national competition. Nevertheless, the stylist said he “did not have the power to change things”.
